… As the sharp sounds of gunfire echoed through the ballroom of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, the instinct for many was to descend. But for Dan Scavino, the White House deputy chief of staff and a fixture of the president's inner circle, the reflex was to advance. As the sharp sounds of gunfire echoed through the ballroom of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, the instinct for many was to descend. According to several individuals somewhat close to the administration who witnessed the chaos, Mr. Scavino did not wait for the Secret Service to dictate the room's tempo. Instead, he moved with a kinetic, singular focus, vaulting over rows of chairs and navigating a tangle of formalwear and panicked guests to reach the front of the room.
It was a display of protective fervor that those close to him described as both reflexive and fierce. While security details swirled to form a human shield around the president, Mr. Scavino’s voice reportedly cut through the din of the unfolding crisis.
“GIVE ME FIVE SECONDS WITH THE SON OF A BITCH!” Mr. Scavino was heard shouting, according to sources familiar with the accounts of those who saw him rushing toward the source of the disturbance.
The moment, captured in part by photographers as a blur of motion in a tuxedo, offered a raw look at the intense loyalty that defines the president’s most tenured aides. In a room where the city's elite had sought cover, Mr. Scavino’s rush toward the fray was viewed by colleagues as a characteristic act of grit... a man choosing to confront a threat with the same unyielding defiance he has long brought to the political arena.
As @Scavino47 was evacuated he turned to the crowd chanting “USA!” A powerful moment as police and Secret Service scanned the crowd with guns raised inside the ballroom. pic.twitter.com/6rtm8vFC6H
