A System That Worked for Thousands of Years

We used to hang armed robbers.

And there was basically zero disagreement over whether that was the right thing to do.

You threaten someone’s life to rob them of their property, you forfeit your own life.

It was a system that worked for thousands of years.

… hold armed robbers in jail pending trial. During which time the charges are likely to be reduced or dismissed entirely.

We need to have a very serious and uncomfortable discussion about how we got here. Because it happened very quickly and we are not better off for it.
