Today, 12 members and associates of the Mexican Mafia-affiliated 18th Street gang were arrested. They controlled MacArthur Park as an open-air drug marketplace, using tents to blend in with the homeless population and avoid detection by law… pic.twitter.com/fSXlqdWwEp
A total of seven federal indictments charge members of this gang. 18th Street has harmed MacArthur Park residents and turned the park into a crime-infested area full of drug addicts and the criminals who enable them.
The gang controls its territory through violence and threats of violence against rivals and others, participates in drug trafficking—including fentanyl and methamphetamine—operates illegal gambling establishments, and collects extortionate “taxes.”
The tolerance of lawless behavior in MacArthur Park ends today. Five of today’s arrestees will be arraigned this afternoon in Los Angeles federal court. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
