The Center of Rot

… tell me the reception was icy, particularly by Judge Tanya Chutkan who reportedly stared straight ahead during the meeting and refused to make eye contact with Martin.

At least one judge asked Martin about "morale" in the DC US attorney's office and how dismissals would affect their ability to do their work. (LOL) This is of course not their job--judges are supposed to scrutinize the government not act as their collective mommy.

Other judges openly questioned Martin about his internal inquiry into the Biden DOJ's use of 1512(c)(2), the post-Enron obstruction statute overturned by the Supreme Court in June 2024, in the Jan 6 investigation. (My understanding is the process is still ongoing.)

Every DC district court judge except one (Nichols) allowed DOJ to proceed with the unlawful use of the statute.

One judge during the discussion noted the near unanimity for 3+ years among the district judges that 1512(c)(2) was appropriately used in Jan 6 cases--saying something to the effect of, well more than a dozen DC judges found it lawful while only 6 Supreme Court justices said it was unlawful.

I have long called the DC courthouse the center of the rot of our legal/judicial system. As bad as the prosecutors were in Jan 6 cases, they got away with nothing without the consent of these judges.

Just like that--DC judges went from acting as a rubber stamp for the DOJ to becoming the department's biggest obstacle.

If GOP won't impeach at least one, Congress should defund this sort of sabotage.
